Why is Greece called Xila?
In contrast to Maixi, Xila stuck as a translation for Greece in general usage. Based on the first few attestations in the late 1830s, one might say that the coinage of the Chinese word Xila based on “Hellas” was due to a German missionary's decision.Jan 24, 2024
