Even among patients with genotype 1 HCV infection, protease inhibitors are contraindicated in certain patients. Specifically, protease inhibitors are not approved for use in patients who have decompensated cirrhosis, patients who are co-infected with HIV, or patients who have undergone liver transplantation.
