What causes abasic sites?
AP sites result from cleavage of the N-glycosylic bond between the nitrogenous base and the deoxyribose sugar, leaving an intact phosphodiester backbone. Base loss can happen because of spontaneous hydrolysis, base damage leading to destabilization of N-glycosyl bond, or the action of specialized DNA glycosylases.
