Vitalik Buterin shares updated 2024 roadmap for Ethereum
Ethereum ETH +0.02% Co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared his updated 2024 roadmap for blockchain, outlining key priorities for the ecosystem moving forward.
These priorities include Merge (a strong share-of-stake consensus), Surge (a goal of 100,000 transactions per second between Ethereum and its Layer 2 networks), Scourge (reducing risks around MEV and liquid pooling), Verge (easier block verification), Purge (simplifying the protocol) and Splurge (everything else).
In his post on X, Vitalik endorsed single slot finality (SSF) as “the easiest way to solve the bulk of Ethereum.” [Proof of Stake] existing weaknesses in the design,” he said, praising the progress made in L2 networks and Verkle tree implementations.
Vitalik also explained how Scourge priority is being redirected across two key “theaters” to combat economic centralization in Ethereum: MEV and the liquid stake pool. The growth of Ethereum staking service Lido has raised concerns about economic centralization on Ethereum since the blockchain’s transition to proof-of-stake consensus.
Among other minor changes, the core priorities of the Ethereum ecosystem remain the same as last year’s draft. Although the changes are roughly ordered by priority, Vitalik declined to predict a timeline for changes to the ecosystem.
