These are the Best Altcoins of 2024, According to Experts

The cryptocurrency market is constantly evolving, and altcoins often steal the spotlight from their well-known counterpart, Bitcoin. As we enter 2024, experts in the field have identified several altcoins with significant potential.

Two famous names in the crypto industry, Miles Deutscher and Michaël van de Poppe, shared their insights by highlighting the best contestants of the year.

These are the Top 5 Altcoins of 2024

Miles Deutscher’s top five picks cover a variety of altcoins, each with unique strengths and potential growth catalysts. Starting with Arbitrum (ARB) and Optimism (OP), Deutscher highlights their connection to the upcoming Ethereum EIP-4844 upgrade, which promises lower fees and improved competitiveness.

According to Deutscher, this network upgrade could lead to increased adoption and increased values.

“The EIP-4844 upgrade is set to reduce Ethereum layer 2 fees by an order of magnitude… If you were paying $2 for an LP deposit on Arbitrum, you may now be paying only 5 to 10 cents. So this will definitely be the adoption of Cctalyst for layer 2s because it makes them cheaper and more competitive in terms of usage,” Deutscher emphasized.
Another of Deutscher’s picks, dYdX (DYDX), stands out for its role in the decentralized exchange (DEX) narrative. Its move to its own chain in Cosmos (ATOM) and its strong fee generation capacity, totaling $36 million in the last 180 days, positions it as a lucrative investment option.

“I believe in the ethos of decentralization and think having a decentralized solution for trading is extremely valuable in the crypto economy. “This is not something we have fully seen yet, but I think dYdX has the most upside of all the indexes,” Deutscher added.

Celestia (TIA) is the third choice, praised for its modular blockchain structure that allows various components to be stacked on top of each other, such as layer 2 solutions and other blockchains. This flexibility has attracted many new applications and deployments, according to Deutscher.

Thorchain (RUNE) is the fourth choice from Deutscher, praised for its unique mechanism in facilitating cross-chain liquidity. It is a decentralized solution for the direct exchange of assets such as Ethereum and Bitcoin, a feature that is increasingly in demand.

“RUNE is, in a sense, a reflexive or leveraged bet on the bull market. If there is a major bull market and you know that Bitcoin, Ethereum and other assets are going to explode, you know that RUNE also needs to set the price higher for the application to work, so it is a super-rotational mechanism,” the German explained.
Finally, Frax Share (FXS) tops Deutscher’s list. With its multifaceted approach, including its lending protocol, new layer 2 chain, and strong team behind it, Frax Share is a comprehensive investment in the DeFi space.

Michaël van de Poppe took a different approach. He focused on both established and emerging altcoins to avoid unnecessary risks.

“I believe it is not right to enter very small altcoins to maximize risk. I think combining your returns and having a proper strategy will pay dividends in the long run. Otherwise I would go to a casino, go to the roulette table, get lucky there, and then move on,” Poppe said.
Ethereum (ETH) tops the list not only due to its potential to outperform Bitcoin, but also due to anticipated developments such as the spot Ethereum ETF and the deflationary Proof-of-Stake (POS) system. Poppe explained that Ethereum is “undervalued” but has the potential to “generate higher returns in the coming period.”

“The fact that Ethereum is currently bottoming out against Bitcoin and also the first quarter of the year is generally a period where Ethereum performs really well. “All of these arguments combined will probably give me a real investment thesis to look at Ethereum as the first altcoin I would look at,” agreed Poppe.
Arbitrum and Optimism, which are also on Poppe’s radar, are known for their promising trends and potential high returns as part of the Ethereum ecosystem. He proposed a dollar-cost averaging strategy for these assets, taking into account current market positions.

Chainlink (LINK) is another important player in Poppe’s portfolio; DeFi is valued for its role in the RWA and NFT sectors and has the potential to rebound after a long bear market.

“I think DeFi is probably cornered and added with RWA and NFTs will do really well in the next cycle… So I want to capture that by positioning for something that will likely be important for the entire ecosystem,” Poppe said. “I chose it,” he said.

Finally, an emerging project, Sui (SUI), completes Poppe’s list. Sui represents an investment in the competitive landscape against Ethereum. According to Poppe, this may reflect the successful run of projects such as Phantom and Avalanche in 2021.
