Google Launches Node Hosting Service with Ethereum Support

To make things easier for Ethereum developers and projects, Google announced its cloud-based node engine service this Thursday.

Blockchains often rely on networks of nodes, or in some cases, computers running designated software to confirm transactions and store historical data. These nodes run programmed codes for various crypto networks and serve as a fundamental building block for the proper functioning of the Web3 ecosystem. The more nodes a network has, the more scalable, reliable, secure and decentralized it is.

Officially called the “Blockchain Node Engine,” Google’s new offering will allow creators and developers to rely on Google Cloud to create a new node, making the entire process much easier, faster, and more secure. The service will be fully managed by Google, eliminating the hassle of hiring a separate team to maintain and monitor the nodes. According to Google, it “actively monitors nodes and restarts them if something goes wrong.”

Addressing Key Challenges

The two main challenges that the Blockchain Node Engine will address are the time required to deploy a node and the daunting task of keeping it running.

“Blockchain Node Engine reduces these pain points and also gives developers full control over where their nodes are deployed.”

Google’s new service also includes numerous security features, such as Google’s Cloud Armor, which is built and designed to stop denial of service (DDOS) attacks that congest and slow down networks. Additionally, customers can now choose where their nodes will be deployed geographically.

Centralization Concerns

But the launch was also met with some skepticism. People have expressed concerns about centralization, which could be a direct result of the node engine service. Google officials are reportedly aware of the problem and have no intention of taking over the entirety of Web3.

Google’s Interest in Blockchain

In January this year, Google described Blockchain technology as a “tremendous innovation” and shared their intention to develop node validators that can be used as services by blockchain projects. With the growing interest, Google has created a core team of experts researching blockchain-centric services and tools that are planned to be released in the coming years.

Currently, Google initially only supports the Ethereum network but intends to expand its node hosting service to other major networks in the future.
