fantom Founder Andre Cronje Reflects on Bitcoin and Ethereum’s State Bloat Problem

Fantom co-founder Andre Cronje, known as the godfather of decentralized finance (DeFi), has further raised concerns about probabilistic certainty on blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, as the market sees expanding use cases and adoption of traditional finance. Said Phantom already figured it out state bloat While Ethereum developers are trying to solve state bloat on the chain.

Andre Cronje Says Phantom Solved the ProblemTate Bloating Problem

In response to Ambient Finance founder Doug Colkitt’s belief that Ethereum is the only chain in its long-term plan that aims to solve state bloat, Andre Cronje said, “I’m pretty confident in saying we’ve already solved state bloat in Phantom.”

The Ethereum roadmap calls for the use of Verkle trees to ensure “data is small enough to be appended to each block.” It can help validators and nodes become stateless, as the entire ‘state’ can be stored more efficiently off-chain.

But Andre Cronje said that any blockchain that uses probabilistic certainty, or any variant of the longest chain rule, will not solve this problem. Bitcoin and Ethereum chains depend on probabilistic certainty. Finality means that a block of transactions is considered permanent and cannot be changed or rolled back.

Phantom’s usage areas abBFT (Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance) consensus mechanism that does not require the longest chain rule.

Additionally, Fantom introduced its new database Carmenis a flat storage method that does not use tree or dictionary structures while preserving the cryptographic signature of the world state. This greatly reduces the bloat of the current active status (two periods). Carmen supports real-time pruning, and most validators can enable pruning, although archive nodes must still retain all data.

After the adoption of the above technology, the state of Fantom is reduced from approximately 2 TB (archive) to 60 GB (archive). Cronje said the state bulge has been a key milestone since Phantom’s early days.
