What happens if the abducens nerve is damaged?
Abducens nerve palsy causes an esotropia due to the unopposed action of the antagonistic medial rectus muscle. The affected eye turns medially and is unable to abduct properly. The esodeviation is incomitant, greater when the patient is looking toward the affected side and when fixating at distance versus at near.
